David--a poem

David*

If I could talk to you I’d say
that self-improvement
is fine, in its way
but small gains are enough–
that what’s important
is today.

Your death is such a shame
for if you could have let
the moment pass
you’d still be here
and we’d be free from
useless guilt and blame.

Ruth Powers, copyright 2005

*This poem was written shortly after the suicide of our friend, David.
